The Brig Niagara
is docked next to the Maritime Museum in Erie, Pennsylvania. This
actively sailing ship is an accurate reconstruction of Admiral
Oliver Hazard Perry's flagship from the War of 1812.
The US Brig Niagara is a Sailing School Vessel and inspected by the
US Coast Guard. Sailed by 16 professionals and 20 students, the ship
doesn't carry regular passengers, only Sailing School Students.
The US Brig Niagara was used by Admiral Perry to defeat the British
in the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813 near Put-in-Bay,
Ohio. "We have met the enemy and they are ours"
Original armament included eighteen 32-pound cannonades and two
12-pound long guns. The main mast is 118 feet tall and the vessel
displaces 297 long tons.
The war ship sailed with a crew of 155 officers and men. Admiral
Perry fought under the battle flag emblazoned with Captain
Lawrence's dying words:
