Four months after
the August 14, 2008 groundbreaking ceremony for the new Pittsburgh Penguins
hockey arena, Consol Energy Inc won the naming rights, making the
official name CONSOL
ENERGY CENTER. Details of the 21-year naming deal were not
readily available in the December 16th announcement, but some estimate the total
amount could be worth around $100 million.

 |
Consol Energy Center will cost $321 million to build with
completion set for Fall 2010. The owner is the Sports & Exhibition
Authority of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. The 720,000 square
foot building has six levels and occupies an 8 acre site. The new
center will have a full service restaurant and seat 18,087
spectators for hockey games. Premium spaces include 62 Suites and 4
Party Suites,
236 Loge Box seats and 2,000 club seats.

LOOKING BACK
The new all-purpose arena will replace Mellon Arena, the oldest hockey venue in
the National Hockey League, at age 47. Due to its domed shape, the
arena was affectionately called "The Igloo" by local hockey fans. It
was home to back-to-back Stanley Cups in the early 90's, and has
hosted hundreds of events ranging from monster truck jams to world
class concerts, WWF and of course, circus performers.
|
|

CIVIC ARENA c.1961 |
| Originally known as the Civic Arena, this domed structure was state
of the art when it opened in 1961, with some calling it the 8th
Wonder of the World due to a mechanical stainless steel roof that opened
for fair weather events. Attending a concert there, and seeing that
dome open to starry night skies, was in itself the memory of a lifetime. Just like
Pittsburgh's former
Three Rivers Stadium, many fond
Pittsburgh memories will linger once The Igloo is
finally gone. |
