A STORY TOLD OVER MANY LIFETIMES

When you walk among the redwoods, time seems to stand still.  Like our own lives, though, this forest is constantly changing! Reaching over 2,000 years in age, the life of a single redwood tree can span 60 human generations.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park does more than just protect the largest contiguous stand of these ancient trees.  Thanks in part to preservation efforts and visitors like you; it also protects a story that will continue unfolding far into the future!

The redwoods you are visiting today represent just a small fragment of an ancient, world-wide forest. During the late Jurassic and early Cretaceous periods, redwoods covered much of the earth's northern hemisphere, leaving behind fossils as far away as Alaska, Siberia and Greenland. As you explore Humboldt Redwoods State Park, can you imagine dinosaurs rubbing elbows against the ancient redwoods' ancestors?
