POCONO RACEWAY
Most people think of Honeymoons when
they think of the Poconos, but another attraction draws race fans
there throughout the year - Pocono Raceway. Also known as the
'Tricky Triangle' due to its unique triangular shape, NASCAR fans
fill the stands twice a year for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS).
During a visit in August 2008, we captured the following photos of
Pocono Raceway and the NASCAR racing events that took place that
Sunday.
The first race was held at Pocono Raceway in 1968 and the first
NASCAR Cup 500 mile race took place there in 1974. The raceway is
grateful to Bill France Sr. who helped the track through several
struggles in its early years, so the main tower is appropriately
named the Bill
France Tower.
Over the past 40 years, Pocono Raceway was completely renovated into
the track it is today. Over a ten year period in the 1990's track
owners invested $30 million dollars in renovations that included:
new paving and crash walls, new garage area, new motor home park
containing 150 sites for racers, and a Paddock area that puts fans
within 60 feet of the cars. Other amenities have helped make the
Pennsylvania race track "PFC" - pretty, friendly and clean.
