DEFENSE
One of Coach Tomlin's smartest moves was
retaining Dick LeBeau, architect of the Steelers Zone Blitz. With
nearly 50 years of NFL experience, Dick LeBeau returns in 2007 to
continue the Steelers' tradition of outstanding Dee-Fense.
Little known facts about #44 LeBeau: As an NFL player, he still
ranks 7th in all-time interceptions (62) and holds the NFL record of
171 consecutive games as a Cornerback.
Mar 27, 2007 - Coach Tomlin
announced that he is staying with a 3-4 as his base defense this
season. "We have the best 3-4 people in the world"
June 2007 -
Coach Tomlin promoted defensive line coach John Mitchell to
Assistant Head Coach. Mitchell will also continue as defensive line
coach of the Steelers.
September 3, 2007 - James Farrior was
named the Steelers defensive team captain.

'Happy Birthday Coach Dad'
The
defense came very close to delivering a shutout in
celebration of Coach LeBeau's 70th birthday today, gift
wrapping 6 sacks, 3 recovered fumbles, 2 interceptions,
and holding Jamal Lewis and the Cleveland Browns to only
46 yards rushing. The Steelers defensive unit also
presented a birthday cake to 'Coach Dad' along with a
shiny new gold Rolex.

September 9, 2007 - The Big Corps
- The Steelers varied their defense and used 4 down linemen 13 times
against the Browns. This alignment leaves one linebacker and adds
two defensive backs.
September 16, 2007 - The Steelers
Defense held the Buffalo Bills to 3 points.
September 23, 2007 - Bryant McFadden
returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown. The defense has
12 sacks in their first 3 games.
September 30, 2007
- The Steelers defense held Edgerrin James to less than
100-yards rushing (77) and extended their streak to 29 games against running backs.
October 7, 2007 - The Steelers shutout
the Seattle Seahawks and held them to only 38 yards rushing
and 106 yards passing. The defense held Shaun Alexander to less than
100-yards rushing (11 for 25 yards) extending their <100 yard streak to 30 games against running backs. The Steelers
defense hasn't allowed a touchdown in the first half all season.
"They showed
their character... it was a total team effort."
Coach Tomlin
October 10, 2007 - Fans on NFL.com voted
Ike Taylor NFL defensive player of the week.
Numero Uno - the Steelers lead the league in total
defense.
October 28, 2007 - The Steelers
Defense extended its streak to 32 games for holding
opposing running backs to under
100-yards rushing. The Steelers rank 1st in the NFL in
overall defense - 4th rushing and 4th passing.
November 5, 2007 - ROLB
James Harrison
had a showcase game against the Baltimore Ravens with 9
tackles, 3.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 1 interception and 1 fumble
recovery.
November 11, 2007 - Another outstanding
play by
James Harrison who forced a key fumble at a critical part of
the game. The Steelers D has gone 34 consecutive games not
allowing a 100-yard rusher.
November 26, 2007 - Someone once said a
defense has done their job if they hold the other team to 19 or
fewer points. By that standard, the Steelers Defense
overachieved by playing a perfect game against the Dolphins,
allowing ZERO points. Tyrone Carter had 11 solo
tackles. James Harrison raised his sack
count to 8.5 and earned the
new moniker, Mr. Monday Night.
December 2, 2007 - The Steelers defense
played another great game. Worthy of note is the Steelers'
secondary that limited T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chad
Johnson to 128 yards receiving, while the rest of the Steelers'
defense kept pressure on Carson Palmer (17 of 44 for 183 yds)
and put a lid on Rudy Johnson who only gained 34 yards on 14
carries.
December 9, 2007 - The Steelers'
defense held the Patriots to 22 yards rushing on 9
carries.
December 16, 2007 - An interception and
50 yard return by
Anthony Smith became the rallying point in the game, inspiring
his teammates to come back from 15 points down to tie the game in the 4th quarter.

OFFENSE
Offensive Coordinator Bruce Arians
is rewriting the Steelers playbook. Coach Arians plans to use three
or four wideouts on more 1st down plays, with the quarterback lined
up under center. 'Steel Coast Offense?'
In recent years under Head Coach Bill Cowher, the Steelers rarely
used more than two or three wide receivers on 1st down plays,
reserving those formations for 3rd and long, with the quarterback in
the shotgun formation.
September 3, 2007 - Hines Ward
was named Steelers offensive captain.
September 9, 2007 - Big Ben
set a new career record with 4 touchdown passes.
September 23, 2007 - After 3 games,
Willie Parker leads the NFL with 368 yards rushing, averaging 5
yards per carry. The Steelers Offensive Line contributed to
an exceptional average of 6.2 yards per rush against the
49ers.

Two big reasons for a
strong running game
September 30, 2007 - Santonio Holmes
had six receptions for 128 yards and two touchdowns.
October 7, 2007 - Willie Parker
rushed for 102 yards against the Seattle Seahawks, and Najeh Davenport
had 58 yards rushing with two touchdowns that allowed him to do his
Heinz Field Hop into the stands. Big Ben
had a Big Day (18 of 22 for 206 yards
and 1 TD for a 120.8 passer rating) highlighted by 13 straight completions before he was rested in the 4th
quarter.
October 28, 2007 - The Steelers
Offense has now scored 11 consecutive touchdowns when reaching
the Red Zone. The Steelers
rank 4th in the NFL in overall offense - 1st rushing and 21st
passing.
November 5, 2007 - The Steelers
Offense was running on all 11 Cylinders as it flattened the
Baltimore Ravens like a runaway freight train, scoring 35
points in the 1st Half against the 2nd best Defense in the NFL.
November 11, 2007 - Rushing games by
Willie Parker (105 yds) and Ben Roethlisberger (49 yds), combined with 5
catches by Heath Miller, gave the Steelers (7-2) their 9th
consecutive win
over the Cleveland Browns.
November 26, 2007 - A race horse that
performs well in muddy conditions is called a good mudder.
During the Steelers' 2007 Turkey Bowl, played on
day-old super-soggy sod, Big Ben's passing (18 for 21, 165 yards),
Hines
Ward's receiving (9 for 88 yards) and Willie Parker's rushes (24 for
81 yards) proved they were all great mudders.
December 2, 2007 - The week-old sod
stayed intact nearly as well as the Steelers' offensive line
which allowed no sacks. Hines Ward once again showed
his tenacity for clutch catches in muddy conditions with 11 catches
for 90 yards. Ben Roethlisberger completed 21 of 32 passes
for 184 yds.

Hines Ward
1st in Steelers career TD's

Bradshaw. Willie Parker rushed 14 times for 100 yards (7.1 yd avg).
December 20, 2007 - Najeh Davenport
carried the ball 24 times for 123 yards (5.1 yd. avg). Carey
Davis had six carries for 28 yards (4.6 yd. avg). The Steelers
lead the NFL in time of possession, averaging 34:10 minutes
per game. Ben Roethlisberger is 2nd in the NFL with a QB
Rating of 104.1
December 31, 2007 - The Steelers
finished 3rd in Rushing in the NFL regular season averaging
135.5 yards per game. Willie Parker finished 4th in the NFL
with 1,316 yards.
