Shrub and flower beds add beauty to a home or building by helping to blend the vertical lines of the structure with the horizontal lines of the ground. Plantings should be designed to help create this blending effect without distracting from the natural beauty of the structure.

Landscape design perspectives

Some schools of thought on landscape design indicate there shouldn't be more than 5 different types of trees or shrubs within one viewing area.  They feel that too great a variety can draw the eye to the planting instead of the building as well as creating a "hodge podge" effect.

Different strokes for different folks!

Other schools of thought feel the greater the variety the better; diversity adds to the interest of the overall planting. It is important to decide which style suits your personal tastes. Most people find it desirable to have 'seasonal interest' in their landscaping, with evergreens bearing the brunt of the winter look, flowering trees and shrubs for spring interest, annual flowers for summer color, and varied leaf color in the fall.

Good landscape maintenance makes a big difference!

BEFORE LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE
Some older landscape shrubs needed replaced while the rest of the shrubs needed trimmed. Beds were mostly in need of edging, weeding and mulching.

AFTER LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE
Ornamental shrubs were replaced and others were trimmed and shaped. Beds were weeded, edged, fertilized and mulched with dyed brown mulch.

Properly arranged with contrasting shrubs, landscape beds create a lovely design which is pleasing to the eye and anchors a (vertical plane) house to the surrounding (horizontal plane) lawn.
