You almost forget these sorts of things are
missing, since they aren't there to remind you
of their absence. But this past Saturday, I
drove past a fantastic planting of spring
flowering bulbs that featured tulips.

Tulip displays
like these have become a rarity near Pittsburgh
WOW! -- this front yard flower show
took my breath away! My first
inclination was to capture some photos to share
with donnan.com visitors. My second thought was
wondering how in the heck this homeowner
prevented the tulips from being eaten by
whitetail deer.
This gets to the crux of the problem you see,
all the deer residing in suburbia love to eat
tulips. Or is it suburbia residing in deer
country? Anyway, deer aren't fussy about what
color the tulips are, and sometimes they lull
homeowners into a false sense of security by not
striking until the flower buds are just ready to
open - CRUNCH - GOBBLE - YUM!
Therefore, since the 70's, gardeners have quit
planting tulips since it is equivalent to buying
expensive deer food. Fortunately, for many
spring scenes, daffodils still have a shot at
completing their bloom cycle without Bambi's
intercession.
Since you may not see tulips in many other
places, let's take a look at some tulip photos
and feel the deja vu of tulip days gone past.
