Definition: Any of a family (Gesneriaceae) of tropical herbs (African violet or Gloxinia) with chiefly opposite leaves and highly zygomorphic flowers. New Latin Gesneria, genus name, from Konrad Gesner, Swiss naturalist, who died in 1565.
