Wheeling
was founded by Colonel Ebenezer Zane in 1769.
Wheeling
developed around Fort Henry, which was built in 1774, and named in
honor of Patrick Henry. The town of Wheeling
was established in 1795 and incorporated in 1836. Wheeling
is situated on the Ohio River
and is
the county seat of Ohio County,
West Virginia.
National Road
construction reached
Wheeling
in 1818 and helped it become known as the 'gateway to the west.' Wheeling was twice the
capital of West Virginia, first from 1863 to 1870, and then from
1875 to 1885. |
